18 characters URL to 8 characters effects?
Hi all,
We presently have a news website with 14,600 articles cached by google using the 18 character URL. We have 300-400 unique visitors per day.
We are now contemplating whether to move to a new catchy domain name with only 8 characters.
what could be the side-effects of this move?
will google cache all articles again using the new URL?
Can I use 301 redirect to redirect traffic from old to new URL?
what if someone use a cached link from the old URL such as old-site-name/article/date/article-title.htm will they be redirected to new-site-name/article/date/article-title.htm?
Any other issues?
Thanks in advance.

First how many characters are there in URL of this website "seoweboptimization" exactly 18. we are at good position on Google for more then 6 months, mean you can get good traffic from your existing website. But still if you want to make or create brand name or want to get direct traffic then your website URL should be short.
One thing if you transfer one of your old non SEO friendly URL to SEO friendly URL its not effect much on ranking but you may lost some Page Rank. Your ranking might goes down at initial if you are up on search engine for some hard keywords but over all not much effect on long tail keywords. Google will cache all pages again when you redirect your website to new URL. But this may take some time, you need to create new links for new URL. Yes HTTP 301 permanent redirect is best for redirecting. No issue of cached links they will redirect to new one. Create some links for those pages which you want to cache fast for new URL.
